  5.                                Mayan Freedom

  7.   A practical example of limits to freedom has recently passed across the
  8.   desktop of my life. The phenomena is simply that skateboarding along the
  9.     San Fransisco Embarcadero, north of the Ferry Building, is no longer
  10.   allowed. Every skate along the Embarcadero, whether midday Wednesday or
  11.  Midnight Rolling on Friday, i was overcome with apprehension cruising past
  12.   these kids. The fiercely male adolescent behaviour of jumping over, onto
  13. and into very large concrete and glass structures is not what frightens me.
  14.     Rather, "getting" hurt by flying skateboards striking me down is my
  15.  personal weakness. But i miss these kids now, and when i chance to see one
  16.       --and they are relegated to traveling solo because of these new
  17.  restrictions--i now feel apprehension not for myself anymore, but for the
  18. defeated youth: the disenfranchised and forgotten victors of any battle for
  19.                      freedom that "adults" might wage.
